In 2007, the BC SPCA helped more than 40,000 injured, abused, and homeless animals throughout the province of British Columbia. The BC SPCA was created under the auspices of the provincial Prevention of Cruelty Act, and is the only animal welfare organization in BC which as the authority to enforce laws relating to animal cruelty. In 2007, the BC SPCA investigated more than 4,600 complaints of cruelty and neglect and seized more than 1,500 animals from harmful situations.
